Caro Kann Defense

The Caro-Kann Defense is a popular opening on all levels. The opening suits the solid black player who doesn't mind playing for a small, long term, advantage, based on a active bishop and a strong pawn structure. In order to aim for an advantage black sometimes needs to survive some pressure and tactical motives available for white early in the game. Black can hope for some counterattacking chances and a superior structure. The theory on the opening contains quit a lot of lines, but the general plans and ideas are clear. The Caro-Kann is the perfect opening for the fighting player, who doesn’t mind playing for small advantages or theoretical battles. The set-up can be used to other opening moves than 1.e4 as well. It's an opening one can play a chess life long. Great players put the Caro on a regular basis on the board, such as Hikaru Nakamura, Anatoly Karpov, José Raúl Capablanca, and Alexander Grischuk. The list of specialist who wrote books about the opening is a rather long one: among theme are Alexey Dreev, Vidit Gujarathi, Jovanka Houska, and Victor Bologan.

Caro-kann: Move By Move - Cyrus Lakdawala
2012 Everyman Chess Caro-kann: Move By Move-Cyrus Lakdawala

White has many possibilities to his disposal to try and undermine the Caro-Kann. Cyrus Lakdawala shows how black can react to all these different types of white possibilities. He convincingly shows that in some cases - e.g. the Panov-Botvinnik Attack – you should blockade, swap and avoid mate, to later cash in on the positional advantages. Also in most other lines the Caro-player must be ready to patiently unravel, trusting in the inherent solidity of the position.

Panov-botvinnik Attack (move By Move) - Lorin D'costa
2014 Everyman Chess Panov-botvinnik Attack (move By Move)-Lorin D'costa

Are you an 1.e4 player who finds it hard to tackle the Caro-Kann? Yes, indeed, the Caro is a tough nut to crack. But the Panov-Botvinnik Attack might offer you attacking lines that normally do not occur so often in this opening. The starting position of this line is 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. c4. The Panov favours the attacking, tactical player because many lines on the board are opened and theory is being sidestepped. This book is indeed for the 1. e4 player who likes sharp lines.
