Dragon Sicilian Chess Books

Dragon Sicilian

The Dragon is one of the most attractive and aggressive members of the Sicilian-family. Probably this - and the shape of the black pawn structure - is the reason the opening is called after the legendary, dangerous creature. In the Accelerated Dragon black plays the g6 on move 4, without including 4...Nf6 5. Nc3, but the general ideas stay the same as in the main Dragon. Black fianchettos his bishop on the a1-h8 diagonal and castles short, hoping for a quick d5. White usually castles long and tries to exchange the dark squared bishops. Opposite side castling normally is a recipe for fireworks, and this opening is no exception. Pawn storms towards the enemy king are often to be seen, as well as pawn, exchange and piece sacrifices. The Yugoslav Attack is one of the most prominent lines of the Dragon Variation, but there are other stinging possibilities for both colour, for example the so called Dragodorf, combining ideas from both the Najdorf and the Dragon. Main advocates of the 'normal' Dragon are Boris Gelfand, Tony Miles, Veselin Topalov, Hikaru Nakamura, Chris Ward and Gawain Jones. The latter also being the main theoretician and writer of classics on this theme. Other well written books on the Dragon are written by Carsten Hansen, Peter Lalic, Andrew Martin, and Simon Williams. Do you want to combine clear cut ideas with razor sharp play? The Dragon might well be your preferred beast on the board.

The Dragon 2 (grandmaster Repertoire) - Gawain Jones
2015 Quality Chess The Dragon 2 (grandmaster Repertoire)-Gawain Jones

The two volumes of this standard work are together considered the chess bible for the Sicilian Dragon. Probably even more than the other publications on the subject these volumes dive very deep into the matter, making the books popular on all levels. Volume two deals with the move 9. 0-0-0, the Classical Variation, Fianchetto Variation and Minor Lines. In other words, the second volume starts where the first volume stops, together making it a complete work.

The Dragon is an opening where one can learn about the dynamic balance between the initiative and material; attack and counterattack; and pawn structure and piece play.

The Sicilian Dragon: Move By Move - Carsten Hansen
2016 Everyman Chess The Sicilian Dragon: Move By Move-Carsten Hansen

The Move by Move–series is known for its clarity and completeness. This publication on the Dragon contains almost 500 pages, and mainly focuses on the pure or ‘old-school’ Dragon, which by the way is more modern than ever. The material in this book has been split up in three parts: 1. Non-Yugoslav Attack, 2. Yugoslav Attack without Bc4 and 3. Yugoslav Attack with Bc4. Rather than just presenting a repertoire for black Hansen covers the main lines as objectively as possible.
