Grünfeld Defense Chess Books

Grünfeld Defense

The Grünfeld is a sharp, highly theoretical defense against 1.d4 based on some clear strategic ideas. The main battle is about the centre. Key question: is the large pawn centre of white a strength or a liability? And is white ready to parry all tactical threats to hope for a long term edge? The black player off course likes to prove the latter, mainly based on his strong dark squared bishop on g7 and the pawn move c5. Ernst Grünfeld beat Alexander Alekhine the first time he opted for this opening in 1922. Ever since the Grünfeld was popular among the elite players. Grünfeld specialist are Vasily Smyslov, Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik Peter Svidler and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. For the 1.d4-player it can be useful to do some specific preparation against the Grünfeld. As the black player this sharp opening can be considered a weapon of great strength and clarity. If you don’t bother to do your bit of homework to try out prepare your opponent with long, sharp, interesting, lines, the Grünfeld may well be just your cup of tea.

In modern days the Grünfeld Defense has always been a reasonable popular opening, with extensive theoretical debates. The white player is not always ready to meet this dynamic opening for black. As a result the side lines and so called anti-Grünfeld lines are almost as important as the main lines. This publication recognises that, and offers both the black and white side some direct lines and strategical ideas. This opening gives many options to both black and white.
