King's Gambit

The King's Gambit is one of the most aggressive opening on white's menu. In the romantic era of chess the King's Gambit was often to been seen. In the late 20th century the opening got a little bit out of fashion, but lately it is popular again. By playing 1. e4 e5 2. f4 white offers black a pawn in exchange for quick development and pressure on the f7-square. Usually it leads to sharp play and tactical opportunities for both sides. The King's Gambit is a great opening for beginning chess players due to its relative simple ideas and straight forward play. More advanced players can also use the opening, as a surprise weapon or steady in their repertoire. Black has several defends to his display, so the opening contains quit a lot of theory. Black can hold on to the pawn, follow the normal rules of development or decline the pawn and offer a countergambit. Boris Spassky, Nigel Short, Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer and Viktor Kortchnoi are among the players who played the King's Gambit with great success.

2013 Quality Chess King's Gambit (grandmaster Guide)-John Shaw

Centuries ago many games started out with the King's Gambit. In modern history it became somewhat out of fashion, because it was thought that black could equalise easily. John Shaw proves this isn't the case at all, and it's fair to say the romantic opening is back with a vengeance. Shaw proves the sharp lines are very relevant in this computer era and black has to know what he's doing and be very precise to equalise, still leaving dynamic options left for both sides.
