Open Sicilian

In this chapter you'll find the Sicilians that are not most played, but still considered very popular. Below is a list of books on the Taimanov, Scheveningen, Kan, Kalashnikov as well as on the Richter-Rauzer Attack. The main advantage of playing one of these lesser known Siclians is that white may comes a little bit less prepared, while you still play a very sound, sharp and clear cut opening variation. In the Taimanov black's idea is to play a quick e6 and develop the bishop to c5 and sometimes b4. This can transpose to Hedgehog or Maróczy Bind type of positions. In the Scheveningen black plays d6 and e6, keeping control over the centre. White can choose many set-ups, the Keres Attack with a quick g4 being one of the more popular. In the Kan black combines a6 and e6, aiming for a quick b5. The Kalashnikov has - apart from its own merits - similarities with the Sveshnikov. The Richter-Rauzer Attack is a often seen variation white can play against several Sicilians, and as black one has to be prepared for this. If the Najdorf and the other main Sicilians are a bit too much on the sharp side for your tastings, one of variations mentioned above may well be a great alternative that suits your style.

Catastrophes & Tactics In The Chess Opening - Volume 6: Open Sicilians: Winning In 15 Moves Or Less: Chess Tactics, Brilliancies & Blunders In The Chess Opening (winning Quickly At Chess) - Carsten Hansen
2017 Independently Catastrophes & Tactics In The Chess Opening - Volume 6: Open Sicilians: Winning In 15 Moves Or Less: Chess Tactics, Brilliancies & Blunders In The Chess Opening (winning Quickly At Chess)-Carsten Hansen

The title of this book is so long, it tells the whole tale, leaving this text as some sort of page filling I’ll happily write anyway. This book is about opening tricks and traps in the Sicilian Defense. Sooner or later this happens to every chess player: you're making one lousy move and that seems directly fatal. Or - to see it from the bright sight - you will trick your opponent at one time in your career, or maybe even more often.

Play The Sicilian Kan: A Dynamic And Flexible Repertoire For Black - Johan Hellsten
2008 Everyman Chess Play The Sicilian Kan: A Dynamic And Flexible Repertoire For Black-Johan Hellsten

The Kan - sometimes referred at as the Paulsen Variation - is a sound and flexible opening, and one of the Sicilians with the least amount of theory. It's fair to say by playing the Kan there no long term weaknesses in black's camp. Downside could be you normally have a small space disadvantage and initially white is ahead in piece development. The latter is normally somewhat equal after twenty moves. Because of all other positive notes the Kan leaves enough dynamic opportunities left, also for black.

Dismantling The Sicilian: A Complete Modern Repertoire For White - Jesus De La Villa, Max Illingworth
2017 New In Chess Dismantling The Sicilian: A Complete Modern Repertoire For White-Jesus De La Villa Max Illingworth

Dismantling The Sicilian: A Complete Modern Repertoire For White concentrates mainly on the main lines of the Open Sicilian from the white perspective. The philosophy of the authors is: against main lines, play main lines, and against secondary lines, play secondary lines. That being said, De La Villa and Illingworth go very deep in these (mostly) main lines and present new ideas and certain lines that have been tested both in practice and by strong computers.
