Queen's Gambit Chess Books

Queen's Gambit

The Queen's Gambit is one of the most popular openings on all levels. Not without a reason, because after 1. d4 d5 challenging the centre immediately with 2. c4 seems like a logical, straight forward plan. From here on two branches are to be seen, black can accept the gambit by taking the pawn or decline it. The former sometimes is a proper gambit, if black chooses to hold on to the pawn, or can lead to some sharp play when black decides to give back the pawn - on his terms - in a later moment. The latter - not taking the pawn - is far more popular, leading to several variations, such as the Tarrash, Ragozin, Rubinstein Attack, Slav Defens and Chigorin Defense. Or even some more rare variations such as the Albin Countergambit, the Baltic Defense, Marshall Defense and the Symetrical Defense. These openings all have their own fair deal of theory and several books have been written on these topics. Chess authors in the likes of Eric Schiller, Nigel Davies, Chris Ward, Bogdan Lalic and Boris Avrukh have studied the possibilities for the white side in great depth. From the black side (Queen's Gambit Declined) John Cox, Matthew Sadler, James Rizzitano and others have published profound pieces of work. On the Queen's Gambit Accepted some very instructive books have been written by Alexander Delchev, Semko Semkov, Maxim Chetverik and Alexander Der Raetsky. It's almost needless tot say that almost all world champions and top players have played the Queen's Gambit with both the white and the black pieces. If you're not afraid of positional play and studying some theory playing the Queen's Gambit with white should be a logical choice. If you want to try sometimes else than the Indian Defenses with black, 1...d5 seems more than a plausible option.

The Ragozin Complex - Vladimir Barsky
2011 New In Chess,Csi The Ragozin Complex-Vladimir Barsky

This may well be called the standard work on the Ragozin, for both white and black, and for all levels. After the starting moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d5 3.c4 e6 4. Nc3 Bb4 the starting position of the Ragozin appears on the board. Black now has several ideas; pushing e5, the so called light-square strategy, and an attack by the pawn majority on the queenside. The Ragozin is increasing in popularity, both at the top and at amateur level.

The Art Of The Tarrasch Defence: Strategies, Techniques And Surprising Ideas - Alexey Bezgodov
2018 New In Chess The Art Of The Tarrasch Defence: Strategies, Techniques And Surprising Ideas-Alexey Bezgodov

The Tarrasch Defence starts with the moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3. Nc3 c5, directly challenging white’s centre. Usually these moves lead to an isolated d-pawn for black, which offers the second player some dynamic attacking chances. Traditionally it’s a bit of an underestimated opening. Precisely because of this, 1.d4-players sometimes don’t bother to study it thoroughly. This offers black practical chances, mainly because it’s a sound opening on it’s on right, as this book convincingly shows.

1.d4: The Queen's Gambit (grandmaster Repertoire) - Boris Avrukh
2016 Quality Chess 1.d4: The Queen's Gambit (grandmaster Repertoire)-Boris Avrukh

It’s fair to say that this book together with the other many 1.d4-volumes can be called the lifework of Boris Avrukh, one of the great theoreticians in the chess world. Apart from that, the series is arguably the best if one wants to play 1.d4, on any level. The books in the series are updated every few years, including the latest theory invented by GM’s, computers, and Avrukh himself. If one wants to play 1.d4, after the reply 1…d5 the most principled and maybe interesting continuation is 2.c4.

The Queen's Gambit Declined: Move By Move - Nigel Davies
2017 Everyman Chess The Queen's Gambit Declined: Move By Move-Nigel Davies

A very clear introduction for the beginner and advanced player who is a bit fed up with 1.e4, or for whatever good reason wants to learn how to play 1.d4. As usual in the Move by Move-series the different ideas are explained in a patient and crystal clear manner, even paying attention to the very first – seemingly logical - moves. The question and answer-model makes one understand and remember the variations even better. The content and build-up is a rather logical one, and contains all one should know on 1.d4.
