Spanish Opening (Ruy Lopez) Chess Books

Spanish Opening (Ruy Lopez)

The Spanish or Ruy Lopez is by far the most popular of all chess openings. Since the introduction by Spanish priest Ruy Lopez in the 16th century it has been played on all levels. And since the midst of the 20th century all great players have played the opening, usually with both colours. Why is the Spanish so popular? Probably it's the balance between tactical sharp play on the one hand and strategic, positional play on the other hand. It combines these two main elements which make the game so beautiful, often leading to very interesting games with chances for both sides. Because of it's popularity a lot of theory has been developed extensively over the years. On general you could divide the opening in three categories: the Open Spanish, the Closed Spanish and other variations. In all variants black has several defences to it's display. In the Closed Spanish, starting with the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Pf3 Pc6 3.Lb5 a6 4.La4 Pf6 5.0-0 Le7, a lot of great players have their own variation named after them, like Breyer, Zaitsev, Steinitz, Tschigorin and Smyslov, as well as the the Marschall Gambit. Off course with white there's ways to differentiate from the main line. Playing 5. d3 or 6. d3 is fashionable these days - initially popularised by Peter Svidler and others to avoid theory - but now having it's fair chair of theory of it's own. In the Open Spanish (1.e4 e5 2.Pf3 Pc6 3.Lb5 a6 4.La4 Pf6 5.0-0 Pe4) the most famous line is the Berlin Defense. This opening sometimes results in the queenless Berlin Wall, being popularised greatly by Vladimir Kramnik during his world champion match against Garry Kasparov in 2000. Also the Tartakower and Tarrasch are often seen in the Open Spanish. Other popular lines (neither Open or Closed) are the Classical Variation, the Jaenish Gambit or Schliemann Defense and the Cozio Defense. With black you also have to be ready to face the Exchange Variation, (a Bobby Fisher favourite), where white decides to exchange his bishop for the knight early in the game by playing 4. Bxc6. Playing the Ruy Lopez has many advantages - but as seen above - you have to be ready for many black options. With black - if you're a 1. e4 e5-player - you have some nice lines to pick from. A lot of instructive books have been written on the Spanish for both colours, by e.g. Victor Bologan, Roman Jiganchine, Eric Schiller, Neil McDonald, and Ivan Sokolov.

Berlin Wall - John Cox
2008 Quality Chess Berlin Wall-John Cox

The Berlin Wall is the nickname of the queenless middlegame that occurs after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4.0-0 Nxe4 5.d4 Nd6 6.Bxc6 dxc6 7.dxe5 Nf5. The game starts off with a Spanish, to become a Berlin Defense and after the queen exchange chess players have been calling this the Berlin Wall, because of the tenaciousness character of blacks defense. This book concentrates mainly on understanding the opening, rather than presenting long lines of theory without explanation.

Ruy Lopez: Move By Move (everyman Chess) - Neil Mcdonald
2011 Everyman Chess Ruy Lopez: Move By Move (everyman Chess)-Neil Mcdonald

Neil McDonald points out that the Ruy Lopez is often called a solid opening, but according to him in many aspects it can be described as the most unsolid answer to 1. e4. However it may be, the Spanish certainly is one of the most popular openings on all levels, and the reason might just be this double edged characteristic. In Ruy Lopez: Move by Move McDonald presents an overview of the basic theory, useful for both white and black. The essence lays in the opening/middle game phase.

Play The Ruy Lopez - Andrew Dr Greet
2007 Everyman Chess Play The Ruy Lopez-Andrew Dr Greet

In this book Andrew Greet offers white a strong, specific Spanish repertoire. He divides the book into three clear chapters. Part one is on variations with 3… a6 and part two is on 3…a6 4. Ba4 and fourth move alternatives for black. Part three is the core of the book, where Greet gives his full attention to the theory of the so called Worrall System (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bb6 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. Qe2). This last move may not be so often seen in Grandmaster practice, but it goes with certain strong ideas, tricks and long-term plans.
